HEARING GOD —  3 WAYS GOD SPEAKS

Prayer

2 Jul

God is still speaking — are you listening?

There’s a quiet question many people carry but don’t always say out loud: “How do I know if it’s actually God speaking to me?” Not if God speaks — but how to recognize His voice. Because sometimes it feels like silence. Or confusion. Or too many thoughts at once.

But the truth is this: God is still speaking. The challenge isn’t always His silence — it’s our ability to slow down enough to listen. We live in a world full of noise:

  • constant scrolling
  • constant thinking
  • constant rushing

And yet, God often speaks in ways that require stillness. Not always loud. Not always dramatic.
But steady. Gentle. Clear.

When was the last time you made space just to listen — not ask, not rush, just listen?

📖 3 Ways God Speaks

God is not confusing in how He communicates — we just sometimes overlook the ways He already uses.

1. Through His Word

This is the foundation. God will never contradict what He has already spoken in Scripture. But beyond reading, there are moments when something stands out — when a verse feels timely, personal, almost like it’s speaking directly into your situation. That’s not coincidence. That’s God bringing clarity.

2. Through His Spirit

This often feels like a nudge. A thought that won’t leave. A gentle conviction. A sense to pause… or move forward. The Spirit doesn’t shout over you — He leads you. And the more you learn to recognize that inner prompting, the clearer it becomes over time.

3. Through Peace

Not the kind of peace that means “everything is easy.” But the kind that settles within you even when things are uncertain. Peace is often God’s way of guiding direction — like an internal compass. And here’s the key:

God’s peace doesn’t always remove fear, but it steadies you in the middle of it.

There have been times when my circumstances felt uncertain, but internally, there was a kind of peace I couldn’t fully explain. It didn’t answer every question. It didn’t remove every doubt. But it grounded me. And over time, I began to recognize that kind of peace as one of the ways God was guiding me — not by making everything easy, but by steadying me within it.

⚖️ Discernment — Is it God, me, or fear?

Learning to hear God also means learning to discern. Because not every thought comes from the same place. Here’s a simple way to begin recognizing the difference:

  • God’s voice feels steady, clear, and aligned with truth
  • Your own thoughts often reflect your desires, logic, or emotions
  • Fear feels urgent, loud, and pressure-filled

I’ve had moments where something felt clear in prayer — a direction, a decision, or even just a sense to wait. But almost immediately after, doubt followed. I started overthinking it, trying to analyze every angle, wondering if I had just made it up. And yet, underneath all of that, there was still a quiet steadiness that didn’t go away.

I didn’t always get it right straight away. I’m still learning. But over time, I’ve started to recognize that God’s voice doesn’t rush me or pressure me — it settles, even when everything else feels uncertain.

When you’re unsure, pause and ask:

  • Does this align with truth and what I know of God’s character?
  • Does this bring a sense of peace, or pressure?
  • Is this leading me toward trust — or just comfort?

Discernment grows with practice. You don’t have to get it perfect — you just have to stay open. God’s voice may be questioned, but it doesn’t compete.

Trust what God showed you

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t hearing God. It’s trusting what you heard. You might have felt that moment before:

  • a clear sense to step back
  • to speak up
  • to let go
  • to move forward

And then… doubt creeps in. “Was that really God?” “What if I’m wrong?”

There have been times where I felt a strong sense to move in a certain direction — not with every detail mapped out, but with enough clarity to take a step. And I remember hesitating. Not because it didn’t feel right, but because I wanted more certainty… more confirmation… more proof before moving.

But that clarity didn’t grow through overthinking — it grew when I actually took the step. And looking back, it wasn’t that I needed more direction. I needed more trust.

Clarity often comes before confidence. And confidence grows through obedience. You don’t always need more confirmation — sometimes you need to move forward with what you already know. Even small steps of trust strengthen your ability to hear Him more clearly next time.

Ready to Grow in Hearing God?

Learning to discern God’s voice doesn’t happen overnight. Like any relationship, it grows through time, consistency, and intentional connection.

One of the greatest ways we develop spiritual sensitivity is by creating a daily rhythm of prayer, Scripture, and listening.

To help you begin, I’ve created a simple 7-Day Prayer & Listening Challenge designed to help you slow down, draw near to God, and become more aware of His leading in your everyday life.

Over the next seven days, you’ll spend a few intentional minutes each day reading Scripture, praying, reflecting, and learning to listen for God’s voice.

Download the challenge and begin your journey today.

🙏Prayer for Clarity & Direction

God, quiet every voice that isn’t Yours. Slow my thoughts and settle my heart so I can recognize when You’re speaking. Help me not to overcomplicate what You’re making clear, and not to ignore what You’re gently showing me. Give me discernment — to know what is from You
and what is not. And give me courage — not just to hear You, but to trust You. Even when I don’t have every answer, help me take the next step in faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

💬 Reflection: Have you ever felt God lead you clearly — even if it didn’t fully make sense at the time? What did it feel like? And did you follow it — or hesitate?

✨ The more you learn to recognize His voice, the more you’ll realize — He’s been guiding you all along.
