5 Benefits of Husband and Wife Praying Together

Prayer

6 Oct

Husband and wife unity in prayer not only fosters oneness of heart but also strengthens their spiritual connection to each other and to God. While individual prayers are indeed heard by God, the prayer of agreement brings a unique strength and authority. As such, when a married couple unite in prayer, there is an amplification of spiritual power. The importance of united prayer in marriage cannot be overemphasized or stressed enough.

The Power of Husband and Wife Praying Together

Jesus highlighted the power of this principle in Matthew 18:19–20:
“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Notice that Jesus chose the number two—the smallest number required to form a fellowship. For Him, every occasion where even two or three gather in His name is significant. This truth applies powerfully to the marriage covenant: when a husband and wife pray together in unity, it carries tremendous influence with our Heavenly Father.

5 Benefits of Married Couple Praying Together

1) Guidance of the Holy Spirit
When a couple comes before God in prayer regarding matters that concern them, they invite the Holy Spirit’s direction. Together, they can discern His will, receive wisdom, and find assurance that God is guiding their steps.

2) Strengthens Unity and Nurtures Intimacy
Prayer opens the door for vulnerability and honesty. When spouses pray together, they share their fears, desires, struggles, and hopes. This safe spiritual fellowship nurtures trust, deepens intimacy, and strengthens the bond of unity in marriage.

3) Creates an Atmosphere for Healing Wounds
Unresolved hurts can hinder prayer. James 5:16 reminds us: “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Through prayer, couples learn to see from each other’s perspective, offer compassion, and extend forgiveness. This environment of grace facilitates emotional and spiritual healing, leading to wholeness in the marriage.

4) Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
Prayer softens the heart, making it receptive to the Spirit’s conviction. As couples pray together, they are encouraged to confess faults, seek forgiveness, and grow in Christlike character. This shared pursuit of following after Jesus Christ strengthens their spiritual journey as one.

5) Ensures Prayers Are Not Hindered
1 Peter 3:7 instructs husbands to honor and respect their wives, so their prayers will not be hindered. United prayer creates oneness of heart and draws couples closer to God and to each other. This spiritual unity becomes a strong shield that closes the door to the enemy.

Praying together as a couple allows for a consecrated connection with God  that enhances the bond between husband and wife. This spiritual practice invites divine presence, which nurtures intimacy and guards against any negative influences that might threaten the union.

Cultivating A Consistent Prayer Life Together

Husband and wife having a consistent prayer lifestyle together opens themselves to healing and completeness in their relationship. Such a habit creates a unity that aligns their vision and purpose. Their marriage does not only become a source of mutual blessing to them but also a powerful witness of Christ’s love to the world.

Here is a simple way to create a daily prayer routine that works:

1. Pick a Specific Time: Schedule a time suitable for both of you like in the morning or evening time.

2. Find a Quiet Place: Create a calm peaceful atmosphere where you can focus without interruptions..

3. Start with Scripture:  Build a foundational structure reading a Bible passage together. Discuss what you have read. Ask your spouse about their thoughts. Take turns naming 2–3 things that stand out to you about the passage, about God, your marriage, or your day.

Most importantly, listen to each other’s perspective and keep it simple without getting pressured to turn it into theological debate. As much as possible, focus on what resonates with you about the passage and how to apply it to your lives.

4. Pray for each other: Briefly share one struggle or weakness, and encourage each other with love. The husband prays for his wife’s needs and the wife prays for her husband’s needs.

5. Pray for Your Marriage & Family: Ask God to strengthen your unity, guide your family and make your home a light to others. Close with gratitude to God and saying the Lord’s Prayer together.

6. Remain flexible: If you miss a day don’t get discouraged. Let the goal be consistency not  perfection. As you do,  you will not only pray together more consistently, but you will also grow deeper in unity, trust, and spiritual intimacy.

Ten Scripture Based  Prayers for Your Marriage

Matthew 19:6

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.

Prayer: Dear God our Father, marriage is a sacred union ordained by You between a man and a woman from the beginning. Thank you for joining us together with pure matrimonial bound as one flesh. A union precious, beautiful, and delightful. May the pure flame of your love keep us inseparable, protected and moving forward to fulfill your purpose.

Colossians  3:14

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

Prayer: Father, Scripture reveals to us that loving like Christ is what binds everything together perfectly. Lord, teach us to love like You do. Let Your love bind us together in perfect harmony. May love be the foundation of our marriage.

1 Corinthians  13:4-5

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil.

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, we give thanks to You for Your unfailing love. Lord, make us patient, tender hearted and kind toward one another. True love is not inflated with pride but humble. Christ love does not set itself above others but is willing to serve. May our hearts be set free from pride, selfishness, rudeness and evil works of darkness. May we constantly trust in Your love that never fails.

Hebrews 13:4

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Prayer: Dear God,You instituted the union of husband and wife and have blessed it. But every other union different from this is unholy and condemned. Lord please give us the strength to resist temptation and keep the marriage bed pure from defilement. Help us to remain committed to honor the sacredness of marriage. Keep our love pure and holy before You. Thank you that  our marriage is honourable and already blessed.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

Prayer: Father, Teach us how to make every effort to bear with one another living together in harmony. Help us to discipline our tongues and behaviors.Give us forgiving hearts just as You forgave us. Help us to forgive quickly and fully by allowing the peace-loving spirit of Christ to guide our actions.

Philippians  2:3-4

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach us to be like Christ, an example of humility. May we not attempt to do anything through strife. But instead may we learn to look for and admire the good points in each other. May we learn to put each other’s needs above our own and serve one another in humility.

1 Peter 4:8

And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

Prayer: Dear God our Father, Help us to cultivate a loving heart that overlooks the faults of others and forgive offences. Teach us to uphold Your Word in building each other up and giving practical support to each other to help develop our individual God given gifts. May our love be deep and genuine, covering faults with grace. Above all, may we work in such a way as to bring praise and glory to God.

Matthew 18:19

Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.

Prayer: Father, teach us to always unite our prayers in agreement with Your will. Grant us wisdom, guidance  and the help to do Your will. May our hearts desires, hopes and voices be in perfect agreement. May Christ’s name be glorified  in our marriage.

Philippians  4:6-7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, anxiety cannot change any situation for good but rather it does more harm to the soul. Lord, help us to stand firm on Your promises and not be shaken by problems that arise in our marriage.  In every situation, teach us to pray together and strengthen us to rest in Your peace.

Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are ever faithful to keep your promises. You are a rewarder of those who diligently seek after you. Material prosperity will vanish like smoke but  spiritual values will last for eternity. Help us to treasure spiritual gains above all else. Your love does not fail. May our trust and delight be in You always. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
