Why Seeking God First Changes Everything

Growing in Faith

4 Feb
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” ( Matthew 6:33 NLV)

What You Feed Will Speak

The start of the year is when many people believe it is the best time to plan for their lives, making changes,  setting goals, making plans, and looking for ways to “get things right” for the year. While growth, success, and stability are good desires, the Bible reminds us that the order in which we pursue things matters. When God is placed first, everything else begins to fall into its proper place.

Jesus made this clear when He said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). This year, more than striving harder or trying to fix everything at once, our highest priority must be to seek after God. When our relationship with Him is the center, wisdom follows, peace increases, and direction becomes clearer.

One of the most practical ways to seek God daily is by giving intentional time to His Word. What we consistently give our attention to will shape our inner life—and eventually determine how we respond to the pressures of life.

Immerse in The Word

“My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” — Proverbs 4:20–22

God’s Word is not something to visit occasionally—it is something to pay attention to, listen to closely, and keep in our hearts. In simple terms, God is saying: What you focus on will shape your life.

Just as food affects your physical body, the Word of God affects your heart, mind, and emotions. When we consistently feed on Scripture, it produces life, peace, and spiritual strength. But when fear-filled news, negative conversations, or anxious thoughts dominate our attention, those influences begin to show up in our words and reactions—especially when life applies pressure.

In  Everyday Life Pressure reveals what has been stored inside us.

  • If fear comes out, fear has been fed.
  • If worry and anxiety come out, worry has been given attention.
  • If faith, hope, and peace come out, God’s Word has been dwelling in the heart.

Jesus echoed this truth when He said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). What fills your heart will eventually flow through your words and actions.

 Scripture Reinforces This Truth In:

  • Joshua 1:8 — God instructs Joshua to meditate on His Word day and night so his life would be fruitful and successful.
  • Psalm 1:1–3 — The person who delights in God’s Word is like a tree planted by streams of water—stable, nourished, and productive in every season.
  • Romans 10:17 — “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Faith grows when the Word is heard and received consistently.

Seeking God through His Word is not a religious habit—it is a spiritual priority that brings life.

Take time to reflect

As you begin to get into this new year, take a moment to reflect:

  • What has been getting most of my attention?
  • What am I feeding my mind at the start and end of each day?
  • When challenges arise, what usually comes out of my mouth?

If fear or anxiety shows up, do not condemn yourself. See it as an invitation to refocus. Even a few intentional minutes each day in God’s Word—reading, listening, or meditating—can begin to realign your heart with truth.

Practical steps you can take:

  • Read a short passage of Scripture daily
  • Speak God’s promises out loud over your situation
  • Replace negative thoughts with what God says

Final Encouragement for the year

God’s Word brings life and health. When you seek Him first and give His Word your attention, it strengthens you from the inside out. Over time, you will notice that when pressure comes, faith speaks instead of fear, peace rises instead of panic, and hope replaces worry.

As this new year begins, choose what will have first place in your life.
What you feed will speak—so make seeking God your priority and feed daily on the Word that gives life.
