The Children of Israel had a promise from God, they got to the edge of their promised land but could not proceed further. They could not take their promised land. The walls of impossibilities built into their minds had taken a deep root in them. They were unable to proceed forward to receive their inheritance from God. That generation failed to fulfil their purpose, they wasted away in the wilderness going in circles for 40 years.
